  1. 1904- . Dutch-born US painter who immigrated 
  2. to the USA 1926 and worked as a commercial 
  3. artist. After World War II he became, 
  4. together with Jackson Pollock, one of the 
  5. leaders of the Abstract Expressionist 
  6. Movement. His Women series, exhibited in 
  7. 1953, was criticized for its grotesque 
  8. figurative style. De Kooning joined the 
  9. faculty of the Yale Art School and became a 
  10. member of the National Institute of Arts 1960 
  11. and received the Presidential Medal of 
  12. Freedom 1964. His paintings were commissioned 
  13. for numerous WPA (Work Projects 
  14. Administration) projects, and he won praise
  15. for his mural in the Hall of Pharmacy at the
  16. 1939 New York World's Fair.
